His forthcoming daughter wasn't even the size of a fist before he ran out and bought every child sized piece of sports equipment he could get his hands on. It was no secret that he wanted a boy, a little version of himself that he could bring up playing football and eventually drink beers with. Unfortunately for Steve, eight months after learning he would be a father, one pink little girl screamed her way into the world. Though he was admittedly disappointed, the second his daughter was placed in his arms, he was a goner. Kate would be the first of three girls, all three who would turn their dad from a bit of a hard-ass and gung ho sports buff, into more or less, a complete softie. From the time she was a child, Kate would be described as a precocious child, someone who spoke well beyond her years and was always curious about everything. She loved to read, even if they were just five page books that were more pictures than words. Kate proved to be the light of her parent's life, who rarely got into trouble - not because she didn't do anything wrong, but because she had a way of making her mom or dad laugh before they could severely scold her for anything. From a very young age, Kate garnered quite a talent for speaking, as it seemed like she wasn't a four year old speaking, but she was instead four, going on fifty. The innocence of a child shined through her, and she had always been gifted with being able to articulate very well. Kate was five when her first little sister "invaded" her space, and while her parents feared she wouldn't take to being a big sister, Kate saw her baby sister as a real life doll she got to play with. She couldn't wait until her little sister was old enough to play with, but in the meantime, she would proudly tell anyone who would listen that she was the big sister. The two had formed a bond that nobody else could break into, until of course, their youngest sister was born. Their parents would often muse over the fact that their children seemed to have a language all their own, one that no parent or adult could even comprehend. The three, while varied in ages, were entirely inseparable. Being the oldest, Kate was naturally the one to set examples for the younger two, and had that constant nagging at the back of her mind to do just that. Growing up in Boston was fairly uneventful. She mainly stayed close to home, with the same group of friends she'd had since she was a child. In school, she found an aptitude for storytelling, and excelled in English and Drama above everything else. She never much liked acting in school plays, but her mother loved to come see the plays, so she did them. That, and she did enjoy having an outlet to speak, as she tended to get into trouble for talking in class...a lot. She was ever the obedient daughter, someone who came home after school, didn't mind family time, and who always had her homework done before going out. She felt like she was fitting into what was expected of her, and she didn't complain, as it wasn't her nature. High school was the time that she really came into her own. She grew out of her awkward, gangly phase, and garnered attention from her peers. That attention was not all that welcomed, as she didn't know how to handle it. After spending so many years being the perfect daughter and the 'good girl', she felt the desire to branch out, to rebel, if only a little. She started spending more time with her friends, less time with her family, and the temperamental teenage attitude set in. Her wit and charm were channelled into a more stubborn and sarcastic attitude. It wasn't until she met her high school boyfriend that her life significantly changed. No longer was she entirely concerned with her family and her school work, but she found someone who didn't care what she was supposed to do, but just accepted her for everything she was, or wasn't. She fell so deeply in love with him that she barely had time to comprehend it. Seemingly every spare minute of her senior year was spent with him, and she actually saw herself with him for a long time, possibly even a real future with him. Out of high school, her parents got quite a shock when she announced she wanted to move out of their house, and in with her boyfriend. They were not at all okay with it, but she was old enough that they really didn't have a say in the matter. They had already prepared for her to leave home for college, just the fact she was going to be living in a crappy little apartment in New York with her boyfriend rather than the dorms was what they had to get used to. College felt like a time she could actually breathe, and she was allowed to explore life beyond who she was to her family, and who she was to her friends...she was just able to actually be Kate, someone she didn't have to define in so many words. She flourished in her time at college, and everything just seemed to fit right. She began to form herself as an adult, and really thought that she'd love to do something in the public relations business. She loved her marketing and communications classes, and found that it was rather easy for her to put a good spin on just about any exercise they did in class. Things fit together so well, and Kate felt entirely content. She didn't want for anything to change, and when her boyfriend proposed to her, she felt entirely shell-shocked. As much as she wanted a future with him, she knew she was entirely too young to get married. She wanted to travel, she wanted to see the world and get some semblance of a career before she got married. She insisted that her answer wasn't no, simply a request for more time, but the damage was done when her answer was not an exclamation of 'yes!'. The two began to drift, and her damn stubborn self wouldn't admit that it was her fault. She just thought it was a rough time they were going through, that eventually they would push past it and be fine. She'd get over whatever reservations she had, he'd get over how much she'd hurt him...that was all fine in theory, but when she walked in on him with his pants around his ankles, tangled up with her best friend. It was over right then, and Kate was sure she'd never felt a pain greater than the one that rocked her to her core. She moved in with a friend who was living in graduate housing, and spent a full semester sleeping on a blow up mattress on the floor, until she could get a request in for her own dorm. Her gracious family didn't ever say 'I told you so', but favored keeping their mouths shut. Even though she'd hurt them when she went to live with her boyfriend, they welcomed her home with open arms. It took Kate a long time to move on from what had happened with her ex, and after she graduated with a degree in Communications, she needed a change of pace. She loved Boston, but it just didn't feel as much like home anymore. She took her graduation present of a check from her grandparents and used it to travel. She needed freedom, and moving around was really the only thing that would help her achieve that. Kate went to Europe, and spent a whole year abroad, traveling from England to Italy, France to Greece...she went everywhere she could, and experienced more than she could have ever thought possible in just one year. After her trip, she returned home just bursting with excitement to get her life on a track that she wanted. It was a risk to take time off after school and not immediately run out into the work force, but she needed it. That trip is still remembered as the best experience of her life, and one that really helped her discover who she is. Not as a daughter, or a sister, or a girlfriend, but just a woman making her way through life. The trip helped her become much better at the way she approached relationships. She wasn't closed off from people because of her breakup, but rather cherished the people who she held closest to her life. She began visiting home more frequently, even if that was just a train trip down once a month. She'd take long motorcycle rides with her dad, something he had practically forced her to bond with him over since she was a teenager. She had never quite let go of that love, and relished the time she could just go be out on the road. In terms of her career, Kate began from the year she returned from Europe with an internship one of her old professors helped her to get. She was a grunt for a full year before an assistant position opened up. As fun as being an assistant was, she always had that little nagging at the back of her mind that she could do a far more competent job than a lot of the people she was working for, not so much because she was that full of herself, but because she had a very unique way of handling things. A headhunter from a major PR firm in New York contacted her, offering her a job outright. She was a little surprised by it, but apparently had impressed one of the executives. Sure, she was starting at a junior level, but she quickly worked her way up the totem pole, so to speak, and became one of their top PR coordinators. She spent five years with Coyne PR, before she was fielded out to Spent Magazine. She immediately loved it far more than she thought she would, and decided to make the transition, making her new position permanent. |
